Will we be proud?

Since forever, parents have worried over what kind of world we will leave to our children. Our grandchildren. My children. My grandson.

I’ve often thought that if we knew that the impact of our actions would be felt by our own children, we would strive to do better. To be better.

Gone would be the false narrative of ‘us’ versus ‘them’, the line drawn between brown and white, Asian and caucasian, gay and straight, trans and cis, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu and Christian, male and female, Russian, Ukrainian, American, and Pakistani. If these dividers were gone, if our stupid and ignorant selfish decisions were less about ‘self’ interest and more about ‘our’ interests, wouldn’t we be better? Wouldn’t we be closer to the America of the past that we blindly, if falsely, glorify?

Just a thought as I watch my grandson blissfully sleeping, innocent to the wreckage taking place around the world. What kind of world are we going to leave to him? Will we be proud of the role we’ve played?
